Rainbow Families is an auckland queer parent support group and children’s playgroup which
meets weekly. It is a chance for parents to meet each other and gain support, and for the children to play together.
The group started 4.5yrs ago and as our babies have grown bigger, siblings have arrived and
new families have joined the group we outgrew the space available at different member’s houses and we wanted to be able
to provide more play/educational experiences for the children. In 2003 we applied for ,and were lucky enough to receive a
Community Award from GABA. This allowed the group to hire a purpose designed playgroup space and build up a library of children’s
books which feature queer families or characters.
We have the playspace from 11.30am to 2.30pm the first 3 Fridays of the month. There is a huge
range of toys available to suit babies through to active pre-schoolers, art activities and a big indoor playspace and a new
outdoor playspace. There is also a great area for parents to sit and talk, relax and feed babies. We bring food for a shared
lunch and people come anytime during the 3hrs depending on nap times. The fourth week we have a weekend get together. This
is great because we can catch up with those who may be back at work and not able to make Fridays, partners, dads, older siblings,
those whose children are now at school or those with school age children.
